UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAM (UDSM)
UDSM: The University of Dar es salaam (UDSM) is the oldest, biggest and an internationally renowned public university in Tanzania. UDSM works with PISCES through its four units namely, the Campus College of Engineering and Technology (CoET), Faculty of Science (FoS), the University of Dar es Salaam Entrepreneurship Centre (UDEC) and the Institute of Resource Assessment (IRA).
Campus College of Engineering and Technology (CoET)
has a track record of conducting research in renewable, conventional, and biomass energy; energy efficiency; bio-energy development; innovation systems; environment, climate change; and policy analysis. It also has a good track record of disseminating research results to the rural poor through outreach programmes, which include technology incubation, Cluster Initiatives (similar to Research Into Use) and SME clubs. Current projects and expertise include:
i. Sida/SAREC Engineering Capacity-building programme;
ii. Waste Stabilization Ponds and Constructed Wetlands research project (DANIDA/ENRECA-funded);
iii. Peri-urban Mangrove Forest as Filters and Potential Phyto-remediators of Domestic Sewage in E. Africa (PUMPSEA) (EU funded);
iv. Alternative Energy for Sustainable Development, Environmental Protection and Poverty Reduction in Tanzania (ESEPRIT) (NUFU funded); and
v. Nile Basin Capacity-Building Network project (UNESCO/FLANDERS funded).
The FoS, department of Botany involves the study of plants and related organisms like fungi and algae for understanding of both natural ecosystems and agriculture. Plants impact many aspects of our daily life such as providing food, medicines, paper, building materials, recreation and tourism.
The University of Dar es Salaam Entrepreneurship Centre (UDEC) mission is to facilitate the development of entrepreneurial capacity in Tanzania. UDEC seeks to: Develop and disseminate training and other enterprise development methodologies and programmes to others providers; Strengthen capacity of institutions and net works involved in supporting the establishment and development of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs);Carry out research and provide consultancy services on enterprise development to government, development agencies, business development service (BDS) providers, business firms as well as individual entrepreneurs; Organize competitions and awards as well as matching Tanzanians with foreign investors; and Encourage and empower students and graduates of education and training institutions to choose self-employment as a career and empower them to succeed therein.
Institute of Resource Assessment (IRA)has been engaged in policy-relevant work, carried out in a competent manner with a definite impact on both official thinking and policy-making in Tanzania. IRA has a role of bringing to Tanzania’s attention, the experiences of developmental issues in other parts of the world thus, serving as a link with the outside world and provides insights that would otherwise not easily reach Tanzania.
