Traditional processes of making lime in Sri Lanka are very energy intensive and use lots of wood. This short piece describes the process and highlights some issues in adapting energy practices to more efficient methods.
Anagi stoves are two pot clay stoves that burn fuel much more efficiently, saving wood, time and reducing smoke inhalation. They are made and used in Sri Lanka. This video gives an insight into how the stoves are made and some of their features. Practical Action Sri Lanka has written a paper on the Anagi stoves experience for the PISCES project, which you can see on our publications page.
Market-based Approaches for Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy: Katie Welford, the PISCES communications assistant, recently spoke to University of Edinburgh students Kristina Joss and Gill Davies on their research into market-based approaches to rural electrification in developing countries. Kristina was researching the integration of market-based approaches and business corporate social responsibility for her Msc dissertation, and Gill is a PhD student looking at what NGOs are doing to stimulate supply-side markets for renewable energy uptake. Gender & the Charcoal Value Chain: As part of our capacity strengthening work, PISCES has a number of postgraduate students undertaking research at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Dar es Salaam. Alannah Delahunty completed an Msc in Africa and Development at the University of Edinburgh in September 2011, and she spent time in Western Kenya researching gender in the charcoal value chain. Participatory Market Mapping in the Pisces project in Kenya- Lucho Osorio is the Markets & Livelihoods international programme coordinator for Practical Action.
